Robin has started laying eggs!

Robin has started laying eggs!

For the last few days we have been watching a pair of robins defend our driveway from other critters such as chipmunks and squirrels. We assumed they must have a nest somwhere but couldn't see one. Then we watched the female going into one of the bushes we have under our kitchen window and sure enough she was starting to build a nest.

Now first of all, I am no robin realtor, but I have so say it is a really stupid place to build a nest. First it is right next to the air conditioning unit, secondly, it is right alongside our driveway, so we drive past it quite often, thirdly, it's only about five feet off the ground. So, I would not say it was prime real estate, but what do I know, I'm not a broody robin!

Anyway, over the last few days she has been taking twigs and bits from the garden to the nest and gradually building it up. Today she laid the first egg.

Robins lay one egg a day and so it will be a few more until she is finished. The biggest issue we have is that we will have left before they hatch, which is really sad.

We have a birds eye view (excuse the pun) of the nest from our window and if we were staying would have set up the camera to record the goings on, but it's not worth it as we won't see the babies. Oh well, hopefully the new owners will leave them alone and allow them to fledge. Mind you, robins nests in our garden do not always do well. We have had two under our deck and both were destroyed by raccoons.

As long as we are here, we will keep an eye on things and share the growing number of eggs with you!
