Christmas lights at night in Calgary are, well, disappointing!
The other night we decided to walk downtown to see the Christmas lights at night. We were hoping that the night time display would be really good, but we were disappointed!
These days most cities tend to go crazy over Christmas lighting - yes I said Chrismas, not holiday. I know these days it's not supposed to be politically correct to call it Christmas, but, damn it, that's what it is, CHRISTMAS!
Our first stop was Stephen Avenue, which is the main road running through downtown and is where most of the happening things happen! But there really wasn't much at all. The big tree sculptures that I featured in my street art post were lit in reds and greens, so I suppose that is Christmassy. Also, there were some lights across the road which made it look like snow was falling, which was quite cool, but not wonderful. I tried to get a photo of these, but they didn't really come out very well.
So, we thought that the area around Olympic Plaza would be the place to go, especially as this is where the skating rink is. Sure enough, there were trees lit up and some lighting etc around the rink, but it still seemed disappointing,
There are some buildings that have a bit of extra lighting and the Telus building has a huge Christmas tree lit up on the side of their skyscraper, which is probably the most impressive lighting here, but I couldn't seem to get a good photo of it. Sorry, I'm crap at taking night photography.
In fact, the best lighting came from the Calgary Tower, which was all red on this occasion, but changes every night and sometimes many times per night.
We did see that many of the building interiors were nicely decorated, such as some of the offices which you cannot normally see into during the day, so that was nice. But overall, we were really unimpressed by the Calgary Christmas displays.
